Museum Connections 2025

The health of corporate sponsorship, a Franco-American perspective

Jan 15, 2025 | 4:00 PM - 4:20 PM

Description

The Covid crisis of 2020 predicted the drying up of cultural patronage in favor of other causes. Nothing happened. Coming out of the pandemic, museums and historical monuments became even more attractive for corporate sponsors. Four years later, culture seems to be losing ground. According to the 2024 French funds and foundations barometer published in October, cultural patronage lost four places, and is going backward to the 7th rank among causes supported by corporate funds and foundations. While crises follow one another and sometimes overlap since the outbreak of Covid-19, how do French museums ensure cultural patronage exists? Is support for strictly artistic projects still attractive and prestigious? Faced with the social, economic, climatic and humanitarian emergency, how do American museums, based on a long tradition of philanthropy from major donors, manage to mobilize businesses to their side?
