Strategy and measurement of social impact: a key emerging issue

Description
The evaluation of social impact has seen significant growth in recent years, both in France and internationally. This trend is driven by declining public funding, increasing demands from private funders, and the growing professionalization of the social and solidarity economy (SSE) sector.
In the museum sector, this practice remains relatively rare (at any rate in France and in continental Europe), even as questions of social responsibility and impact gain increasing importance.
But what does measuring social impact truly mean? It goes beyond gauging satisfaction or assessing only the economic value created. Instead, it involves an in-depth analysis of the overall consequences of an organization’s activities—both on its stakeholders and on society at large. This process requires a clear strategy, adequate resources, and a rigorous methodology.
As more funders incorporate these expectations into their criteria, it becomes increasingly relevant for museums to rethink their missions by fully integrating the question of social impact and its measurement. This conference aims to clarify key concepts, explore necessary resources, and present methodologies to build and demonstrate a sustainable approach to social impact.
