Meet Up #26 Immersive digital cultural experiences: perspectives from museums and immersive venues

Immersive digital cultural experiences are playing an increasingly important role in the cultural landscape, but their development does not follow a single model. Museums, producers and immersive venues may work with similar technologies and formats, yet they develop them according to different missions, resources and business models. For cultural institutions, these experiences can extend an exhibition, offer new ways of engaging with collections or experiment with new forms of interpretation. For immersive venues, they are shaped by specific approaches to programming, production and operation. These different approaches reflect practices that are still evolving, transforming not only how these experiences are used and produced, but also the relationships between the different players involved.

This Meet Up will bring together perspectives from museums and immersive venues in France and Germany to explore these issues. Drawing on the first findings of the European study on digital creativity conducted by Correspondances Digitales, the discussion will examine how these formats are produced, operated and distributed, the different cultural purposes they serve, as well as the collaborations that can develop between cultural institutions and specialised players. By bringing these perspectives together, the session will provide a clearer understanding of the different ways cultural organisations are engaging with immersive digital experiences today and integrating them into their practices.

⚠️ This session will be delivered exclusively in French.

Creating a digital experience alongside an exhibition: the collective VR experience A Statue for Liberty, Bartholdi’s Dream, from Paris to New York

— the example of  the Musée d’Orsay  (EPMO-VGE) (Paris, France)

EPMO-VGE preserves and promotes major collections covering, in particular, artistic creation from the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. Through its collections, exhibitions and interpretation programs, the institution develops new ways of sharing artworks and their stories, while exploring how digital technologies can enrich the visitor experience.

Presented alongside the exhibition Auguste Bartholdi, Liberty Enlightening the World, the virtual reality experience A Statue for Liberty, Bartholdi’s Dream, from Paris to New York takes visitors through the design and construction of the Statue of Liberty, from Paris to New York. Based on scientific research and historical reconstructions, the experience notably recreates the now-lost Gaget, Gauthier & Co. workshop. The project provides an opportunity to examine how an immersive experience can complement an exhibition by offering another form of storytelling and interpretation around the same subject.

New perspectives on collections: from the immersive exhibition Loot. 10 Stories to the VR installation Tischgemeinschaft

— the example of the Humboldt Forum (Berlin, Germany)

Located in the heart of Berlin, the Humboldt Forum brings together several institutions around collections, exhibitions and programs dedicated to art, cultures and science. This unique structure provides a setting for experimenting with different forms of digital interpretation within both permanent and temporary exhibitions, offering new ways to share knowledge and engage visitors.

Presented at the Humboldt Forum in 2024 and 2025, the immersive exhibition Loot. 10 Stories combined objects, video and virtual reality to explore the history and provenance of looted cultural objects — objects acquired or displaced in complex historical contexts — through ten different stories. The VR installation: Tischgemeinschaft. Was fällt unter den Tisch?, part of the exhibition Beziehungsweise Familie, places visitors at the heart of family situations inspired by testimonies collected from people living in Berlin. Looking at these two projects together provides an opportunity to explore different ways of using immersive technologies to offer new perspectives on collections, narratives and the subjects they address.

Developing collaborations between cultural venues and immersive venues: ORIGINS – Life's Epic Journey

— the example of the Kunstkraftwerk (Leipzig, Germany)

Located in a former power station in Leipzig, Kunstkraftwerk is Germany’s first permanent museum dedicated entirely to digital and multimedia art. It develops and hosts immersive exhibitions, digital installations and original productions, bringing together artistic creation and digital technologies.

Produced by Kunstkraftwerk under the artistic direction of Markos Kay, ORIGINS – Life's Epic Journey is an immersive experience exploring the origins of the universe and life. The project brings together several international digital artists and combines 360° projections, sound and light installations, special effects and virtual reality with scientific content. Following its first presentation in Leipzig, ORIGINS has also been presented at other cultural venues, including Reinbeckhallen in Berlin. From its initial creation to its presentation in different venues, the project provides an opportunity to examine the collaborations involved in creating, adapting and bringing immersive productions to different locations.
