Biography
Opened to the public in 1803, the Bordeaux Municipal Library preserves a remarkable heritage: more than 500,000 rare and precious works (medieval manuscripts, incunabula, early printed books, maps, plans, prints, etc.).
Among these collections is an exceptional item: the original manuscript of Montaigne’s Essays, a unique testimony to the genesis of this major philosophical work, now inscribed on UNESCO’s international Memory of the World Register.
