Audience Studies – How can we better assess and measure the value of the visitor experience?

The evaluation of the museum experience is no longer limited to simply measuring visitor numbers or observing visitor flows. Today, cultural institutions are exploring more nuanced and sensitive approaches to understand how audiences actually experience their visit, interact with artworks, and construct meaning throughout their journey. This presentation of the study proposes to address two complementary dimensions: the impact of sound environments on the visitor experience, and new large-scale audience research methodologies. Immersive devices, particularly sound-based tours, reflect a growing trend in cultural and tourist venues. They rely on sound compositions and spatialized narratives to enhance the visitor’s sensory and cognitive experience. At the Musée national de la Marine, for example, research projects conducted in collaboration with university laboratories have made it possible to experiment with and analyze the effects of sound-based mediation within a visitor itinerary. Discover how this type of approach opens up new perspectives for measuring not only attention to the exhibition, but also the emotions, engagement, and memory retention generated by the experience itself. At the same time, audience knowledge is now being structured around large-scale research projects capable of going beyond the simple collection of demographic data. The European Sentomus study represents one of the first coordinated efforts to explore in depth the behavior, expectations, and perceptions of visitors in partner museums across several countries. Unlike traditional surveys limited to a single site, this project makes it possible to understand how audiences perceive the museum offer, assess exhibitions and activities, and the value they attribute to their visit, thus providing institutions with benchmarking tools, avenues for strategic improvement, and a better understanding of their social role. Discover how these approaches help to rethink the ways in which the most...

Museums facing climate change, digital projects facing sustainability challenges

The acceleration of today's climate change poses major challenges for cultural institutions, both in terms of preserving their collections and integrating new forms of mediation and awareness-raising. This report of studies is organized around two complementary axes: an examination of the conditions for developing more sustainable in-situ digital mediation offerings, and an analysis of the effects of climate change on museums and the institutional responses being implemented. The first part focuses on the study conducted by the Observatoire des patrimoines de l’Université de la Sorbonne (OPUS Source) and {Correspondances Digitales}, on the sustainability of in-situ digital mediation devices. In a context where digital and environmental transitions require efficiency, funding, adaptability, and monitoring of usage, this reflection explores how to design sustainable digital offerings while enhancing the visitor experience and the societal value of institutions. The study highlights existing practices, from collaborative approaches to resource-sharing strategies, emphasizing the importance of reusable tools, innovative collaboration models, and attention to the environmental impact of technologies. The second part draws on the study conducted by Les Augures, which provides an overview of the impacts of climate change on museums and the adaptation strategies implemented. Based on the analysis of over 1,200 institutions labeled “Musée de France” and enriched with professional testimonies, it highlights climate risks and their effects on infrastructure, collections, staff, and audiences. The study underlines the urgency of strengthening institutional resilience by integrating climate adaptation into strategies, conservation practices, and space management, while exploring how museums can contribute to a more sustainable culture through their transformation. Discover how the sustainability of digital devices and the climate resilience of museums offer new perspectives...

Museum and Ecology: Missions, Commitments, and Practices

Facing the accelerating climate crisis, museums are being called upon to rethink their missions, practices, and responsibilities. How can they reduce their environmental impact while continuing to preserve, share knowledge, and foster social connections? How can they reconcile adaptation to climate risks, conservation requirements, civic engagement, and openness to new forms of collaboration? This roundtable will focus on the book "Museum and Ecology: Missions, Commitments, and Practices" (to be published on January 22, 2026), edited by Lucie Marinier, Professor at Cnam, Aude Porcedda, Professor at the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivières, and Hélène Vassal, Director of Collection Support at the Louvre Museum. The book is the result of a collective effort involving over 80 professionals, scientists, and artists worldwide and offers a structured vision of the eco-responsible museum, connected to life and attentive to contemporary social issues. Through case studies, critical analyses, and conceptual frameworks, the speakers will highlight concrete levers for a credible ecological transition: sustainable exhibition design, new strategic orientations, inclusive and collaborative approaches, and the integration of knowledge production, artistic creation, and environmental responsibility. This roundtable will provide museum and cultural professionals with tools for understanding and action, supporting a still-fragile but essential socio-ecological shift, and helping to build cultural institutions that are more sustainable, engaged, and resilient.
