About us
The FEMS is the network of ecomuseums and social history museums. Founded in 1989 by 28 founding ecomuseums, it now represents more than 200 innovative, nonprofit heritage institutions. The network brings together organizations that, despite their differences, place people and the local community at the heart of their projects and approaches.
Among its missions, the FEMS:
- Coordinates its network to foster mutual support and exchanges among members and to raise awareness of their initiatives
- Represents its members before public authorities, private partners, various professional organizations, and museum representative bodies (at the national and international levels)
- Conducts research and training on museum practices
- Strengthens recognition of ecomuseums and social history museums and their philosophy
- Monitors literature on ecomuseums and social history museums and facilitates knowledge sharing during professional gatherings both in person and online
