Inspiration Conferences: explore the challenges and trends of the sector
This conference series addresses the major transformations of museums, cultural and touristic venues: inclusion, accessibility, new forms of mediation, adaptation to environmental and social challenges, and the impact of artificial intelligence.
Designed with the support of the Inspiration Board, these conferences provide expert insights into the challenges and trends shaping the future of the cultural sector.
Key theme this year: “Navigating Time Horizons”
“The time is out of joint”
The line Shakespeare gives to Hamlet at the beginning of the 17th century resonates with particular relevance today. Technology is transforming both fundamental principles and practices, crises follow one another, audience expectations are evolving, and political priorities are shifting.
Museums, cultural and heritage institutions occupy a unique position in this changing environment, where different time horizons collide and can lead to conflicting priorities.
Navigating different temporalities while evolving with their time has always been, to varying degrees, part of the very nature of culture and heritage: the time required for conservation, research and transmission; the time of cultural creation and production; the time of changing audiences and their practices; the time of innovation; the time of political cycles and budget priorities; the time of internal organisational transformation; and the time of major societal transitions.
Today, these different time horizons are also confronted with the short-term pressures of recurring crises in many forms, whether related to health, climate or (cyber)security.
Faced with these challenges, how can cultural institutions navigate past, present and future time horizons?
What adaptations, strategies, resources and innovations are needed to maintain, with credibility and agility, a commitment to scientific and cultural continuity, strong relationships, and a forward-looking perspective?
These reflections build on the questions explored in 2026 around “Resilience 2.0”. “Navigating Time Horizons” therefore provides the overarching theme for the 2027 Inspiration Conferences.
The conference program is structured around three main themes:
